That claim is what the room takes home, and it is why the speeches feel finished. A speech without a claim is a run of anecdotes, and the audience senses the absence even when every individual line is working.
The second common feature is that the groom is never the butt of the ending. Whatever the joke was, the last minute of every example says something the man himself would be glad to have heard said in front of his new in-laws.
Pick by relationship first, then by tone
A brother has access to twenty-five years and a family the room half knows. That is an advantage and a trap: the brother example below uses exactly one family scene and spends the rest of the speech on the adult version of him.
A friend has to establish standing in the first two sentences, which is why the friend examples all open with how and when they met and something specific about it. A shared house with a broken boiler. Fourteen years and a claim about a famous person that was not true.
Only then choose the register. Any of these stories would work funny or sincere. Tone is a set of choices about which details you keep, not a different kind of speech.

How each example handles humor
The funny example works by pattern rather than by punchlines. One trait, three escalating illustrations, then a payoff. That structure gets bigger laughs than three unrelated jokes because the room learns the shape and starts anticipating it.
The brother example has two jokes and both are about the speaker's own position rather than the groom's failings. Being the third best man in a row, never being thanked for the job. Self-directed humor buys enormous goodwill at almost no risk.

Where the turn happens in each speech

In the funny example the turn is a hard cut: the confidence is funny, and then a completely different story about turning up unannounced during a bad stretch. That works because the speaker earned the room's attention first and then spent it deliberately.
In the short example there is no separate turn at all, because at 230 words the claim and the proof are the whole speech. If you are writing under 300 words, stop looking for a gear change and put your energy into one clean claim.
The four lines to replace with your own
The opening sentence, which places you and gives the room one specific fact. The claim about the groom, phrased as behavior rather than adjectives. The story itself, in one scene with an odd detail left in. And the observation about his partner, which must be something you actually saw happen.
Everything else in these speeches is connective tissue and can be lifted structurally. The connective sentences are deliberately plain, because plain sentences are what let a specific detail land.
The odd detail is the part people skip and it is what makes a story believable. A spreadsheet in a hospital corridor. A boiler excess paid four years earlier and never mentioned. Thirty minutes of sourdough advice given to a woman who owned a bakery. Nobody invents details like that, and the room knows it.
If your story has no odd detail, you are probably summarizing rather than remembering. Go back to the actual day and write what was in the room.
How to cut any of these to two minutes
Keep the claim, compress the story to two sentences, keep one line about his partner, keep the toast. That gets any of these to 230 to 260 words, which is the short example's length.
The first thing to cut is the second illustration. Most best man speeches make their point, then make it again slightly differently. The second pass feels generous while you are writing and reads as padding on the night.
The second thing to cut is the housekeeping. If you have been asked to thank the bridesmaids or read messages, that is a separate 30 seconds and should be stated as such, not folded into your speech and allowed to swell.
What these examples deliberately avoid
No exes, in any register. No stag night detail. No drinking stories, no money, no comment on anyone's appearance, and no version of the joke where he is punching above his weight.
This is not squeamishness. Those subjects are cut because they carry no information. A room learns nothing about a man from hearing that he drank too much in 2014, and one entire side of the family learns something they would rather not have.
Also absent: the fake nerves opener, the long scroll of paper, the dictionary definition of marriage, and the extended bit about not being first choice. All four are recognizable to guests as things best men do, which is precisely why they get a polite laugh and nothing more.
Cut: anything the groom would not repeat at a family dinner.
Cut: any joke needing more than fifteen seconds of setup.
Cut: the prop gag. Props read as nerves from ten rows back.

He did not bring anything, he did not say anything useful, and he did not ask how I was doing, which I was grateful for because I had run out of ways to answer that question.
