Most speech examples online stop at two lines and a bracket. These are complete. Each one runs the length you would actually deliver, so you can hear where the story sits, where the tone turns, and how the last sentence lands.
Read at least two before you write anything. The point is not to find one you like and change the names. The point is to notice that all six are built the same way underneath, and then build yours on the same frame with your own material.
Every speech below is a synthetic teaching text written for this page. The people in them do not exist. Take the structure, take the pacing, and leave the details behind.
The short answer
All six examples run the same five beats: who you are, what the friendship is, one story, the turn toward the marriage, the toast.
The story is roughly half the speech in every case. If your draft has three stories, you have three speeches and no argument.
The funny example still ends sincerely. The emotional example still has a shape. Tone is a surface choice, structure is not.
Shorten by compressing the story, not by cutting the turn. The two-minute version below is the four-minute version with the middle squeezed.
Change the opening line, the story, and the observation about the partner. Those three are the whole speech. Everything else is connective tissue.
How to use an example without sounding like one
Borrowed speeches fail in a specific, recognizable way: the structure is fine and the details are hollow. The room can tell instantly, because a real anecdote has friction in it, odd specifics, a detail that serves no purpose except that it happened.
So use the examples for their skeleton and their rhythm, and refuse to borrow a single fact. If a sentence in one of these speeches could be true of your friend, that is a coincidence, not a shortcut. Write the version that could only be true of her.
A good working method: read one example twice, close the page, then write your own story from memory in whatever order it comes out. Fix the order afterwards. Trying to write into a template line by line produces stiff copy every time.
The shape all six of these share
Open by placing yourself. Two sentences, maximum: your name, your relationship, how long. Guests spend the first ten seconds of any speech working out who is talking, and until they know, they are not listening to the content.
Then one paragraph on who she is, followed by one story that proves it. The story is the engine. It should have a time, a place, and something that actually happened, and it should take up between forty and fifty percent of the total word count.
Then the turn. The story stops being about the past and becomes an argument: this is who she is, and this is why her partner is the right answer to it. Then the glass. Notice that every example below ends with a short instruction and two names, not with a flourish.
Orientation: your name and relationship, in the first two sentences.
Character: one paragraph on what she is like, phrased as behavior.
Story: one scene, told in order, about half the speech.
Turn: what the story proves, and what changed when she met her partner.
Toast: the instruction, the two names, nothing after.
Which example to start from
Choose by relationship first and tone second. The sister speech carries family history and can reach further back. The best friend speech has to establish, in a line, why a friend gets to speak with this much authority, which family never has to do.
If you were asked recently, or you have known her a few years rather than a lifetime, start with the last example. Pretending to a shared childhood you were not part of is the single most common way a maid of honor speech collapses, and it is entirely avoidable.
If you know you will cry, start from the two-minute version rather than the emotional one. Short speeches survive emotion much better, because there is less runway left after you lose composure.
Swapping your story into someone else's structure
Write your story first, on its own, with no speech around it. Just the scene: where you were, when, what she did. Do not compress it yet. Aim for 250 words and let it be messy.
Then cut it to 200 and see what refuses to go. What survives that cut is usually the real story. The details you keep instinctively are the ones with feeling attached, which is exactly what the room needs to hear.
Now build the two sentences before it and the paragraph after it. The sentence before should set up the trait the story demonstrates. The paragraph after should name what it proves and hand the speech to her partner.
If your story cannot be told without explaining who four other people are, it is not usable. Every named person in a wedding speech costs you about ten seconds of the room's attention.
Cutting a four-minute speech down to two
Squeeze the story, keep the frame. The full story becomes one sentence with its single best detail intact: she drove eight hours through the night and then claimed she had wanted to see the area. That sentence does eighty percent of the work of the paragraph.
Then cut the second observation. Most four-minute speeches make one point about the bride, then make a slightly different second point. The second one is almost always the weaker one, and it is the cheapest 60 words you will ever save.
Do not cut the turn and do not cut the toast. A two-minute speech with no turn is an anecdote that stops. Everyone in the room feels the missing beat even if they could not name it.
The three lines to rewrite first
Line one is your opener. If it begins with a variation on for those who do not know me, that is fine, but the sentence after it has to earn attention immediately. The strongest openers state something slightly surprising about the friendship rather than describing the day.
Line two is your single sentence of character description. This is the one people repeat afterwards. Write it as a behavior, not an adjective: she is the person who notices beats she is so caring by a wide margin.
Line three is your observation about her partner. It has to be something you actually saw, not something you assume. Their family is listening for whether you know their person at all, and one accurate detail settles the question completely.
Opener: place yourself, then say something with a bit of edge on it.
Character line: behavior, not adjectives.
Partner line: one observed moment, named specifically.
What actually makes a maid of honor speech memorable
Not the jokes. Guests remember jokes for about an hour. What survives the evening is a single image: a twelve-year-old writing a menu on an envelope, a friend on the phone at two in the morning reading the news in a bad accent, someone sitting at the other end of a sofa every Tuesday for eleven months.
So the question to ask about your draft is not is this good writing. It is: what is the picture the room takes home. If you cannot answer that in one sentence, the speech does not have one yet.
The second thing that survives is the last line. Keep it short, keep it plain, and keep it about the two of them. A speech that ends on the speaker is a speech about the speaker.
