Non-religious vows carry a special responsibility: with no borrowed script, every line has to be earned. The examples below build meaning from evidence, shared values, and chosen commitment rather than doctrine.

Notice what replaces the traditional scaffolding: the open sky instead of a sanctuary, observable love instead of mystery, and promises framed as daily choices instead of fate.

Example 01

Under this open sky

RomanticAny PartnerMediumabout 1 min 16 sec spoken

No scripture, no doctrine, just two people under an open sky making promises they intend to keep. I believe in what I can see: the way you look at me across a crowded room, the way you show up, the way you love with your whole ordinary, extraordinary self. So I make my vows in the only authority I recognize, which is the truth of what I feel. I promise to be faithful to you and honest with you. I promise to keep growing, and to make room for you to keep growing beside me. I promise to build something good with my hands and my attention, day after day, without needing a miracle to stay. And I promise that when the universe does what it does, when things fall apart or fall heavy, I will be there, steady and certain, choosing you again. This life is the only one I am sure of, and I want to spend all of it with you.

Example 02

No tradition but the one we make

HeartfeltAny PartnerMediumabout 1 min 12 sec spoken

We are not inheriting this marriage from anyone. We are inventing it, and that is my favorite part. There is no script for the two of us, no borrowed blueprint, just everything we have learned from every late-night conversation about what we want this to be. So I promise you the things no tradition could promise, because they are ours alone. I promise to keep asking the questions that made us fall in love, and to keep answering them honestly. I promise that our home will run on curiosity, repair, and second chances. I promise to celebrate loudly, apologize fully, and never stop being interested in who you are becoming. And I promise to write our rules together, revising them as we grow, for as long as we both keep choosing this. Today I choose the life we are making and the person making it with me. That is my whole heart, freely given.

Example 03

Secular vows for a modern ceremony

HeartfeltAny PartnerMediumabout 1 min 12 sec spoken

I take you as my partner in everything: the bills, the dreams, the groceries, the grief, the joy, the long Sunday afternoons. I do not promise perfection, because I have met me, and I have met you, and we both know better. I promise something better: presence. I promise to show up for the life we are building, fully and honestly, with my whole imperfect self. I promise to communicate even when it is easier to shut down, to repair even when it is easier to sulk, and to keep liking you, not just loving you, through every phase we pass through. I promise equality in the small decisions and loyalty in the large ones. And I promise to keep this marriage a living thing, fed by attention, protected by honesty, and renewed by the same choice I am making today. You are my favorite person, my equal, and my family. I am yours.

How to make one of these yours

  • Ground big claims in observed facts. Instead of we were meant to be, name the specific ways you show up for each other.
  • Decide together whether to keep any family traditions. Secular does not have to mean stripped, only honest.
  • Name your values explicitly: curiosity, repair, equality, presence. Vows need a moral center even without a religious one.
  • Close with a promise about the future, not a statement about destiny. Choice is the secular vow's strongest word.

Questions couples ask

Can non-religious vows still feel solemn?

Yes. Solemnity comes from specificity and delivery, not religious language. A precise promise said slowly is as solemn as any liturgy.

What do secular couples say instead of till death do us part?

Common alternatives include for as long as we both keep choosing this, for all the days of my life, or simply, for the rest of my life.

Do civil ceremonies require religious language?

No. Civil ceremonies use a fixed legal declaration, and everything you add can be entirely secular.
